Social Studies CBA

Last week we began working on a classroom based assessment (CBA) that the state uses to assess students in areas like music, PE, art etc. For social studies, it involves students choosing a topic around a general theme, completing some research and and writing a short essay in which they analyze the topic. In SVSD, the 7th grade does the “Causes of Conflict” CBA. For more information about this from the state department of education, click here. I gave students a packet last week describing the assignment (see embedded documents below), and they have been diligently (well, most of them anyway) reading about their topic and taking notes. Yesterday they began working on a graphic organizer to help them plan the essay and today they began writing a rough draft. We have also looked at some sample essays to help understand good and bad traits. If you’d like to see some examples of these essays, click here. The students will receive a score out of 4. Scores of 3 and 4 meet standard, while 2 and 1 are not meeting standard. If you’d like to check out the scoring guide click here. I will then convert the score to a letter grade and include that in the “practice” category of my two category grading system where performance is 70% and practice is 30%. Discussions using Edmodo

Another way we've been using our class micro-blog (http://www.edmodo.com/) is to have threaded discussions that involve giving the students a poll question that they respond to. This week and last we have been learning about Indian Removal during the mid 1800's and how the Native American way of life changed drastically in about a 20 year period. I posed a poll question and the students' discussion can be seen below. I enjoyed reading their thoughts.

One of the cool things we've been doing in class lately is using the microphone headsets that were generously provided by a PTSA grant to record our thoughts about some of the things we've been learing this trimester. You can listen to some of the comments your children have been making below:

Excel Map Project

This trimester students are working on a cumulative assignment that I call the “Excel Map”. For this assignment students insert a background image of Washington State into an Excel spreadsheet and then insert comments that explain what they have learned in each chapter. They must have 2 comments per chapter. To organize the comments, I tell them that they must come up with items for each chapter that use all 26 letters of the alphabet. A typical comment might look like this:

“A is for Apple. Apples are grown mainly in Eastern Washington and the state produces 50% of all the apples sold in the United States. Apples are an important part of the economy because they provide a livelihood for farm owners as well as workers.”

Notice that the first sentence simply states the item. The second sentence provides a piece of data while the third sentence explains why the item is important to our state. In addition, to the written portion of the comment, students must “bring it to life” by providing a picture or a link to a website (or both) that explains more about the item.

To help them succeed on this assignment, students have received a scoring guide, explaining how they will be graded as well as a planning sheet to help them think about what they will say on the map. In addition, I have created some screencast tutorials that explain how to use the software. If students do well on this assignment they are guaranteed to pass the class, and thus will not have to repeat it at the high school. However, if they do not do well, then it could mean they won’t pass the class.

COW's and Phones

The last couple of weeks we have been using the Computers On Wheels (COW for short). SMS recently received 20 laptop computers on a cart. More precisely, they are "netbooks", small wifi enabled machines with no disc drives. The students have been loving the chance to have these at their deks. When they finish the day's assignment they get to use the laptops to work on their Excel Map poject. The tricky part is that I have some large classes of 35 students. Luckily, I also have 8 desktops so most of the time, everyone's needs are met.

In addition, I just acquired 40 headsets with microphones that we will be using to listen to and record audio. Just today in the lab I had the students listen to a video that I had made explaining how to get their map into excel and make comments. With the headphones, students were able to control the volume and it didn't have to bother their neighbors. We also tried out the microphones by responding to a voicethread. A New Trimester, Stock Market Winners...

As you may have noticed, I have redesigned my website to make better use of the "screen real estate". Basically, I turned it into a three column layout as opposed to only two. This way the calendar and announcements sections can be seen without having to scroll down.   If you have any ideas or comments please let me know as I am always looking for ways to improve it!
   We have started our third and final trimester of the year. Can you believe it? This means that we have finished our world history part of the class and have moved into Washington State History. This is a favorite of mine to teach as I was born and raised here and think it is such an amazing place. Please be aware that students who do not pass the class this trimester will have to repeat it again in high school as it is a graduation requirement. As part of the class we will be embarking on a trimester long project that I call the "Excel Map". Basically, students will be making a digital map of Washington using Microsoft Excel complete with pop-up comments and media that shows what they have learned in the 13 chapters of the text. I'll be explaining more about this in class tomorrow, but if you'd like to see the scoring guide, click here.
   I am excited to report that we have received information about the woman survivor of war that the 7th grade students are sponsoring for the next year. She is an Iraqi woman with two children. I sent part of the money that the students raised to Women for Women International and they sent me back a packet of information just last week. I'll be figuring out a way that we can correspond directly with this woman. More to come on that in the coming days/weeks. In addition I sent the the remainder of the money that was raised in my Holiday Challenge to UNICEF to purchase a "school in a box kit" that can be used in emergency situations like the Haiti earthquake.
   Finally, I am happy to announce that Gerritt Jones is our 2nd Trimester Stock Market Contest winner! 2nd Trimester Nearing Completion

I just want to make sure that everyone is aware that this Friday (3/5) is the last day to turn in missing work for the 2nd Trimester, which ends next Friday (3/12). So, now is a great time to check that grade online and turn in those missing assignments as well as redo/revise projects or quizzes. Students are welcome to come in at lunch or after school to discuss their grade and make a plan for getting caught up. Of course, students who have been absent will have more time beyond this Friday should that be necessary.

Early Adopter of Cinch, 7th grade teacher Justin Talmadge, known on Cinch as Mr Talmadge, participated in an interview with me this week. We were very excited to see a teacher using Cinch in the classroom. He was at the top of our list when deciding who we would include in a new series of Who’s Who on Cinch. Read on and see how an educator is bringing web tools into the classroom.

How did you find Cinch? I found Cinch by chance when I was searching for ways to embed an mp3 player on my class blog (www.mrtalmadge.com). In my search I happened upon BlogTalkRadio and discovered Cinch from the BlogTalkRadio website.

What prompted you to use Cinch? I was looking for a cheap and easy way to upload audio to my class website using my phone. I had been using Gcast, but they decided to charge $100.00 to use the upload by phone service. I knew there had to be other services out there, so I began looking around online.

Are you still using it for its original intended use or has your use expanded? I only use Cinch for the upload by phone aspect. I have embedded an flash mp3 player on my class blog as well as provided an icon to the rss feed of my cinches

What have you found to be the best benefit of using Cinch? The best part is that it doesn’t cost me anything. Plus, it’s so simple. As I am driving home from school in the afternoon, I simply put on my hands free device and call the Cinch number programmed into my Blackberry. I then record what we did in class that day so students or parents can hear straight from the “horse’s mouth” what went on in class. For students and parents, I have burned the feed using Feedburner and they can subscribe by email if they want.

How do you see people using Cinch in the future in your occupation? I think this could be an easy way for teachers to communicate with their students, but also for administrators to communicate with parents. Rather than the expensive call out services that are used routinely by many districts, why not simply record to a central location and let the rss feed perform it’s magic from there. If one wanted to really get revolutionary, why not sign students up for an account and they can record their own cinches reflecting on the learning they have done in class. I as a teacher could subscribe to each of their rss feeds.

What would you like to see for Cinch in the future? I don’t know if this is possible, but it would be cool if users could select from a menu of public domain or creative commons licensed background music that could play when users click on their cinch.

I'm Back

Hello again students and parents. After taking some extended family leave, I am back in the new year ready to return to a more normal routine. Many thanks to all of you for your patience, understanding and words of kindness. My wife is doing much better, although the doctor said that it could take some time for her body to fully heal. She is now able to do much more around the house, so I am able to get back to doing what I love, which is teaching students here at SMS.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to Mr. Olson, who filled in for me while I was gone. He and I spoke every night and I felt comfortable in his knowledge and abilities, and most importantly, in his way of interacting with the students. It made being gone less stressful knowing that he was taking care of things in my classroom.

As far as curriculum and grades, I will be working this week to get caught up on grading. As you can probably imagine, I am a bit behind and feel a little out of touch. I'll need to spend some time looking at papers and getting a sense for how well the students have been doing. As always, though, students should be checking their online grades and seeing me at lunch or after school to resolve any issues.

Extended Leave

Dear Students and Families,

You may have noticed over the course of the first trimester that I have been gone a fair amount. Some of that time was taken to care for my children, a couple of days were for myself being sick, and some have been to take care of my wife. Now she is having more acute issues that require me to devote more of my time and energy to her. So I have decided to take some extended leave (at least for the end of this week and most of next week). I have met with Mr. Olson, my replacement, and will continue to consult with him about curriculum so that the students experience as little disruption as possible. I will also still maintain an online presence via mrtalmadge.com and edmodo.com. In addition, I will be checking my email if you should have any questions. Mr. T's Holiday Challenge

I was watching TV last night and happened upon a certain talk show that will be ending next year. The hostess was interviewing two Pulitzer Prize winning authors about their most recent book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. I was moved by the the horrendous stories and thought that perhaps my students would be interested in doing something this holiday season to help women in need in the developing world. So, I proposed in class today that we have a little competition to see which of my classes could raise the most money to donate to a worthy cause in support of women. The talk show I was watching provided many options for how to give, but two in particular caught my eye. One, costing a mere 250 dollars, helps an Afghan woman to start a business. Another, for about the same amount, provides a "School in a Box"for children in emergency situations that don't have access to traditional schooling. So, I will be putting 4 collection boxes in my room, one for each class. Let's see over the course of the next two weeks which class can raise the most money. Conferences Recap and Happy Thanksgiving

It was nice to meet everyone this past week. I hope I was able to provide you with some good information and I thank you for sharing with me a bit about your family. I left thinking that it's no wonder our 7th graders are such great kids. Some of the common things that I tried to communicate are as follows:

· Students can retake/redo perfomance assignments (peformance assignments are worth 70% of the grade).

· I am available at lunch or after school on most days (excluding Wednesdays).

· I collect assignments on Friday, so students need to be organized enough to hold on to them for a few days.

· If daily classwork is not finished in class, then it becomes homework and needs to get done by Friday.

· Quizzes from this point on are CLOSED book, but OPEN workbook.

· Unit 2 about The Rise of Islam begins this coming week.

· Trimester 3 is Washington State History and students must pass to graduate from High School.

· If students are absent, they should check www.mrtalmadge.com for accurate information.

We will have our final quiz of unit 1 on Monday (over information in chapter 6). It was originally scheduled for this past week, but I decided to postpone it till Monday. We did a review in class the last couple of days, but students may need to study a bit so that they are ready to go on Monday. Also, thanks to those of you who volunteered your ideas for stock market contest prizes and even offered to bring some in. You can just have your student bring them to me this coming week. The last day of the contest is Monday.

Lastly, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. I know that I am thankful to get to spend my days with your amazing kids. Enjoy the long weekend.

Middle Age Research, Progress Reports...

This past week we have been working in the computer lab as students researched topics of their choice related to the middle ages. You can check out our work at http://www.middleagesmrt09.wikispaces.com. The process we used is similar to the way that students will conduct their social studies CBA (click here for more info) in the spring as part of the way Washington state evaluates subjects other then reading, writing and math. I wanted students to conduct research by selecting a topic, posing questions, making inferences, searching with key words, evaluating websites, summarizing and citing sources.

Also this past week we had our last 15 day progress check before the end of the trimester on November 25th. I updated grades and changed all of the asterisks "*" that students may have had to zero's. This way they get a truly accurate picture of what their grade would have been if the trimester had ended this week. The good thing is that students still have about 10 days or so to make up any work or redo any tests. Because I want to have the grades finalized before parent conferences begin on November 20th, I have decided to make November 18th the last day to turn in work in my class.

Regarding conferences, I look forward to meeting with families on 11/20, 11/23 and 11/24. Conferences will run from Noon-3pm on Friday, Monday and Tuesday. In addition, we'll be offering an evening time on Tuesday from 4:30-7:30. I do have a question for you. The other teachers on the 7th grade team and I have been wondering whether or not to print out a paper copy of student' grades. Does it matter to you if you get a hard copy or is the online access good enough? Friday Activities

Friday's are crazy days in my class. For one thing, each class is only 30 minutes. For another, I usually pack three activities into that short amount of time: assignment turn-in, geography skills practice and a raffle. It's a bit of sprint for me as I teach for 3 hours straight with no break.

Assignment Turn-in
I don't like to collect things on a daily basis, instead choosing to do so on a weekly basis. In theory, this should mean that I am keeping my grades up to date weekly, but somehow things just don't work out that way. At any rate, I have the students turn assignments in by passing them up their section to a person in the front row whom I designate as the "first level of quality control." Then that person is suppose to pass the assignments over to the student sitting closest to my desk. I then take the pile from them and place it directly in front of my monitor (so that the pile can be forever calling out "grade me!"

Geography Skills
I like to use most Friday's as a day to focus on geography skills. So, we get out the trusty atlas and I make students search for things. I use two different online geo quiz resources. One at http://www.theworld.org/geoquiz and another at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee. The first one requires the students to read through a paragraph to decipher what it is they are looking for. Then they have to decide what key word(s) to look up in the index of their atlas. While they are searching I walk around the room and students raise their hand when they think they have the right answers. They point in their atlas and I give them creative economy money if they are correct. The second is more of a traditional quiz, so I alter it a bit by sometimes making them show me in their atlas what the right is. This past Friday I tried something new which was to use the activote devices so that the students could register their response electronically. You can see the device below. The second image is a screenshot I took of a geobee question with the activote spreadsheet overlayed on it, just like the students would see in class. I have signed us up for the National Geographic Bee (click on the link above to read more about it), so hopefully the time we spend on Friday is helping to prepare the students for that.

Creative Economy Raffle
Finally, the last five minutes of class we have a raffle. While students are getting their assignments ready to turn-in at the beginning of class, I walk around and "sell" raffle tickets. The prices varies depending on "what the market will bear". I started out charging 1 dollar, but the price has risen to 3 dollars now that students have had some time to earn money. Usually, I take the money collected and divide it up among the winners of the raffle. It's a pretty fun way to end the week.

This past week started out with me being quite sick on Monday and Tuesday. After my family had been sick the week before, I knew that I was at higher risk for catching something, and boy did I. So I ended up staying home on Monday and Tuesday. On those days, students finished up chapter 3 about The Church and began chapter 4 about Town Life in the middle ages. I came back Wednesday and rewarded the students with a trip to the computer lab. In the lab, students updated their blogs by making a post that reflected on their Church Poems which were turned in on Monday. They also had a chance to trade stocks on http://www.howthemarketworks.com/ (by the way, some of the students are really having fun playing the market!). One of my main goals in the lab, however, was to introduce them to voicethread (click to watch a short demo), a web application that allows group conversations around images. To do that, I created a practice voicethread (click to see it) using one of the pictures from the textbook that shows town life in the middle ages. All of this was designed to prepare them to use voicethread as a way of reflecting on their church poems and provided feedback on their classmates' poems. On Thursday we were back in the classroom where I began teaching students about marking the text and using an abbreviated code in the margins. Specifically, we learned how to connect to prior knowledge and to pose questions as they read. I had to make a copy of a page in the text as I don't want students writing in the textbooks. This week, we may try placing a clear transparency sheet in the textbook and letting students write on that as they read so I don't have make copies of the text (which seems like somewhat of an overuse of paper). Finally, on Friday, I decided to go for it and let the students use voicethread to make comments on their church poems. You can view the voicethread here.

This past Tuesday was also a 15 day progress update. Many students are still working with me to get their missing work turned in. But because I have also been out more than I'd like, it has been difficult to connect with every student. So, if a student is missing work from the previous three weeks or so, I am giving them more time to get that turned in. On the next progress report, however, I will be turning those missing assignments to zero's, at which time they will negatively impact the grade.

Finishing Feudalism, Touring Europe, Writing about the Church

To start, I know that many students have been waiting patiently for me to update their grades. Over the weekend I inserted a bunch of scores, so you should see that reflected in your online grades.

In terms of class activities, this past week we finished chapter 2 about the social structure of the middle ages. I placed a poll on Edmodo, our class microblogging platform, asking students about which social class they would rather have been born into in the middle ages. Here are the results:

On Thursday we began our next lesson, about the influence of the church on life in Europe during the middle ages. We are in the midst of a pretty neat activity that I call a "Tour of Europe". I have placed the students into 6 groups. Each group gets to discuss and read a section of the textbook, as well as engage in an activty to help them learn about an aspect of the church. For example, one group is learning about holidays, which they now know are actually holy-days. They listen to two different pieces of music and discuss the differences. Another group is learning about medieval church art and achitecture, so they get to build a gargoyle out of playdough. Here's a picture of one such gargoyle:

This week we will continue learning about the church. And, for our summative assessment, we will do a small project which involves the students writing a short poem, rather than taking a quiz. You can view the assignment sheet here:

Nobles, Knights, Serfs and Substitutes

This past week was an odd week for me. It began like any other as we spent Monday and Tuesday beginning Reading Notes 2 in the workbook and learning about the social structure of the Middle Ages called feudalism. However, on Wednesday I had to be out of the classroom helping the 6th grade language arts teachers from across the district evaluate their students' writing on the Fall District Writing Assessment. I never like to be out of the classroom, particularly in September, given how important it is to set the tone at the beginning of the year as to what the expectations are. Then, as I was driving in to work on Thursday, I received a call from Stefanie, my wife, who said she was not feeling well and needed me to be at home to take care of Thomas, our two year old, and get Jonah, our 5 year old, off to school. She has pretty much stayed in bed for the last three days with what seems to be the flu. Our doctor went ahead and prescribed Tamiflu for Jonah and Thomas to try to prevent them from getting sick. Thomas had a slight fever on Thursday night, so I made the decision to go ahead and call in for sub on Friday as well. I hope to be back on Monday.

In terms of classwork for the week, we took video notes on 20 minutes videos about Feudalism, The Noble, The Knight and The Serf. The notes are taken in two column format where I give students the topics on the left hand side and they fill in the specific details on the right hand side. We also played a fun review game using white boards. Two students are chosen to go the back of the room and the rest of the class uses their notes and/or the textbook to find key words or phrases. I choose one of the words and the students in the back try to guess what it is using clues from their classmates. My plan was to have students turn-in their work on Friday, which is the normal routine, but we'll have to do that on Monday. I was also hoping to take the student to the lab this past week, to help them set up their own blog (check them out at www.mrtblogs.com) and to show them more about buying and selling stocks for our stock market contest ( parents are welcome to sign up by clicking here and using this password: smseagles). Now the plan is to do that on Monday also.

Lastly, I know that many students have been out sick as well. Of course I will be flexible and work with them to help them make up any work. I highly recommend that students who have been gone set up a time to meet with me to develop a plan for how they will complete the work, particularly the video watching and notes.

Grades Updated

Today was our first official "Progress Report Day." In the past, this meant that I would print out hard copies of each student's grades and hand them out. However, now that most (but not all, I know) families have online access, I simply try to have as many assignment grades inserted in the online gradebook as is possible. When you look at the grade, you'll notice that there are mostly "practice" assignments except for the Chapter 1 Quiz, which is the first "performance" grade. In my class, I use weighted categories. "Performance" is worth 70% and "practice" is 30%. This being the case, it is extremely important for students to do well on their performance assignments (i.e. tests, quizzes, projects, etc). Because the category is worth so much, students are welcome to retake/redo any performance assignment until I cut off grades at the end of the trimester. Take at look at your grades and be sure to communicate with me if you have any questions.

In class this past Thursday we did our first simulation. I chose one student from each class to be king or queen and they in turn chose 4 Lords or Ladies, who in turn chose some knights to protect their "manor". The remaining students were lowly serfs working the land. I was able to get a few props from Mr. Tresman (our part time librarian.

Contest rules are simple: spend at least 40,000 of the allotted 50,000 dollars and buy stock in at least 20 different companies. I would like to invite parents to participate as well. I just wanted to put out a post so that those of you who have subscribed to the blog can see what it will look like in your email in box. Don't forget to check your junk mail folder to make sure your filter didn't automatically route it there. It was great meeting all of you and I am looking forward to a fantastic year.

In terms of class so far, we have turned in a few assignments, but I have yet to update the grades. I'll make it a priority to do that this coming week. We have begun our first lesson on the Legacy of the Romans. We will be having a quiz on Wednesday about that legacy. I also handed out a map of Europe that students can be working on. You can find those by clicking on the "documents" tab at the top of my blog. The map is due on Friday the 18th. On Thursday we will have our first experiential simulation where students get assigned to a social class a la the Feudal system that arose out of a chaotic Europe following the fall of the Roman Empire.

Washington State History

At left is a copy of a letter that I sent home with your children today. The letter explains about the high school credit received for passing Washington State History during 3rd trimester. In addition, the letter requests help in paying for some actors from Living Voices that will perform in class. Last year we had one performance that was quite good. This year I've added a second performance.

On another note, how are your stocks faring in our stock market game? I have extended the end date to March 31st, which is the new end of trimester date. There is still time for you to sign up if you haven't done so. Just click on the green button in the right hand sidebar.

Finally, this Friday (3/6) is the last progress report before the trimester ends. That evening you'll be able to get an up to date idea of how your child is doing so that you can check in with them over the weekend.

Beginning the Rise of Islam Unit

We have just recently finished studying Europe during the Middle Ages. The students have learned much about the legacy of the Romans, manors, knights, lords, The Magna Carta, the bubonic plague, the Catholic Church, The Eastern Orthodox Church and the eastern empire based in Constantinople. We will now move on to studying about the Rise of Islam. Personally, I find this a fascinating topic. I don't remember learning much about the Middle East or Islam in my k-12 education. I wish I had learned more because it seems an extremely relevant topic given the ongoing conflicts that exist in the world and how historical events have impacted relationships between different groups of people. Please know that in this class we learn about different religions because we are studying the way people have interacted throughout history. I don't think one can study people without considering the beliefs that inform(ed) their actions. As a teacher, I don't tell the students what they must believe personally. Rather, we look at the facts and consider all points of view with an open mind.

"Tour of Europe"

We spent 4 days (from Thursday 10/2 to Tuesday 10/7) in room 704 where students worked in groups at stations. They had approximately 10 minutes at each station to do things like: build a gargoyle out of playdough, play a game of concentration, listen to some music on a cd, pretend to be a monk in scriptorium, among others. In addition to the different activities at each station, the groups also read together out of the workbook and completed the reading notes for chapter 3 in the workbook. I am lucky enough to be able to use an empty room in the 7th grade pod for these group activites and simulations. Rather than having to spend time moving desks around in my room, I can have everything ready to go in room 704, which gives the kids more time to do good work. All in all, I have been impressed with the way the students worked together in the groups. There was minimal conflict among students, and most goups were productive. I recently read an article in an educational publication that quoted the CEO of a major company who said that his employees have to be able to work well with each other because the company is structured in teams. I hope that I am doing my part to help train your children to work well together.

Class Update...

I know It's been a few days since I last posted. In class we have been studying the feudal system. Last week we watched some short videos that gave the kids a feel for what life was like for nobles, knights and peasants. The students took notes on these videos using a two column format that they are also using in science and language arts. I collected the Europe Maps on Friday as well, and it looks like the students did a tremendous job. I'll be grading them over the next week or so. Finally, the chapter 2 quiz will be on Wednesday October 1st.

As far as some other odds and ends:

1. The first progresss report is this Friday 10/3. Most students are doing fine so far...it will be the next progress report that really tells the tale.

2. I have created a class contest on the website <www.howthemarketworks.com> so that students can see how they do in a virtual world of buying and selling stocks. Thanks to a parent for recommending this. I'll use the contest and site to teach students some economic lessons. It seems appropriate given the current economic woes on wall street. I'll be taking each class to the lab once a week to sign up and do thier trading, but they can also do it from home.

3. Lastly, I have created a podcast that students/parents can download onto their mp3 players. If you go to the Itunes store and search Mr. Talmadge, you should find the podcast(s).

Feudalism Simulation

Today in class we did a cool activity to teach the kids how the feudal system worked in Medieval Europe. I chose one student to be king or queen. They got to sit on a throne (see picture) and have some food or drink. That monarch then chose 4 lords who had to swear an oath (called homage) to the king or queen. These lords were the leader of 4 corners in the room. The lords then chose a couple of knights for protection and some serfs to work the land. Creative Economy

I have begun using our 7th grade team creative economy money in clas this week (see photo at left). I prefer to use it as an incentive for students. For example, this week I have been trying to "catch" students who are writing in their Eagle Book as well as doing things they should do without me telling them to. However, I will also use it as a way to gently remind students when they are not doing what they should. For example, I did a random Eagle Book check on Tuesday and one student had to give me a dollar because she hadn't been diligent about filling in her Eagle Book. As a social studies teacher, I like this idea (which was adapted for team use by Mrs. Peterson) because it will be a great way for me to teach about Economics (supply and demand, rational self-interest, competition, scarcity, etc.)

I just wanted to let everyone know that we will be having our first quiz on The Legacy of the Romans tomorrow. It's an open book quiz, so hopefully that will reduce the stress level for students. We did a review activity in class today and will do some more reviewing in class tomorrow before the quiz. As with all assignments in my class, if students don't do well the first time, they are welcome to do a retake.

The Romans, Picture Day and Curriculum Night

We have begun our study of world history by reviewing The Roman Empire. The students seemed to have some knowledge from their previous schooling about aspects of Roman life like chariot races, aquaducts, togas and the like. We will use what we learn about the Romans to inform our study of Europe during the middle ages.

Also, tomorrow is picture day, so make sure to be ready with a smile =)

Finally, this Thursday at 6 pm is a chance for parents to meet teachers and see what life is like at SMS. I look forward to seeing as many of you as is possible. If you can't make it, don't hesitate to call or email me.

Worktime on Coat of Arms

I gave the students lots of time to get their Coat of Arms finished today. Many students did get done (see photo at left) and I have begun putting the finished products on the wall. They look great! I was really impressed by the focus and productivity displayed during worktime as well. Many thanks to all classes for their effort. I look forward to learning more about each student as they present thier work to the class.

The First Day!

We made it through the first day without any snafus! The students were well behaved and I tried my best not to bore them with rules and procedures. We talked about the fact that social studies is comprised of four main disciplines--history, civics, economics and geography. We also pretended we were archaeologists and examined an artifact (which was just a penny) to see what we could learn about the culture that produced it (the penny). Finally, we also were given an assignment to begin drafting out a Coat of Arms. If you click here you'll find a copy of the assignment sheet.
